When's the best time to start?

"There is no best or worst time. You can start whenever you want to.

However, it should be remembered that when the weather is severe, birds will appreciate a reliable supplemental food source."

When's the best time to stop?

"If you enjoy feeding  wild birds, there is no reason to stop. You can do it year-round.

If you regularly clean your feeder, there's no reason for you to stop feeding nectar, fruit, millet or suet."

How long does it take for birds to find a new feeder?

"It may take birds only a few minutes to begin using a new bird feeder, but sometimes it may take days or weeks before they become familiar with the new design.

Fill a new feeder with the most popular type of birdseed you offer. Black oil sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts will attract birds very quickly! "

My bird feeder is full of seeds. I haven't seen a bird for weeks. Am I doing something incorrect?

"Check the seed quality you are offering in a new feeder.

If the seed has not been eaten over several days, it may have become moldy or attracted insects and is thus less suitable for the birds.

Throw the seeds away and wash the feeder. Refill the feeder with fresh seed for the best results in attracting birds."

Why does the seed in my feeder get moldy?

"Mold is caused by a heavy rain or snow plugging the feeding parts and allowing water moisturizes the seed.

Always clean, dry and refill your feeders after heavy weather."

What’s the best way to store seed?

"Store the seed in a cool, dry place in an area out of the reach of rodents and pests.

Aluminum trash cans with tight-fitting lids are ideal containers for seed."

Are any human foods unsafe for feeding birds?

"Yes. Birds should not be offered many of the foods humans eat.

Bread does not contain nutritional value for birds; moldy bread can harm birds.

Chocolate is toxic to birds; never offer birds any foods containing chocolate.

Table scraps may not be safe or healthy for birds; most table scraps will attract mice or rats."

Is peanut butter or uncooked rice harmful to birds?

"Peanut butter, by itself, is not harmful to birds. Some people dilute it with birdseed or cornmeal to reduce its stickiness, but that is not necessary.

Uncooked rice is also not harmful. Uncooked grains are a staple for the diet of species of many birds, so throwing rice at weddings is not going to harm any birds."

What if I have to leave town?

"Don't worry if you must stop feeding briefly—while traveling, for example.

In all but the most severe weather conditions, wild birds will find other food in your absence. "

If I start a winter feeding program and then go on vacation will the birds die?

"No, the most of birds depend on our handouts for only about 25 percent of their food.

Our feeder offerings only supplement their natural foods.

When a food supply disappears in one location, they will move on and look for other sources."

What can I do to prevent birds from getting sick from eating at my bird feeders?

"- Do not feed birds the bird seed that has been recalled. Thoroughly clean all feeders and containers that may have come

in contact with the contaminated product

- Keep feeders clean. Clean feeders outside and not in your kitchen sink.

- Keep the area around and under the feeder clean.

- Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after cleaning feeders. "
